Why You’re Expecting Too Much From Your Clients

When’s the last time you received a message and after listening to it/reading it, you had no idea what you were supposed to do next? Do you find that frustrating?  Do you ever wonder, “Was this message meant for me or did this find it’s way to me by accident?”

Have you ever had a client have that same reaction to a message you left/sent to them? This may be an indicator that you’re expecting way too much from your clients.

Recently, someone wanting to earn my business sent me a message, and I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to do next.  In the message, they made reference to something that had nothing to do with our last couple of conversations, so I assumed the message was meant for someone else. I deleted it and moved on to the next thing on my to-do list. It turns out, the message was in fact for me, and they were referring to an email chain from a few weeks back.

It was only after they followed up and clarified what they were asking me to do that I realized what they were talking about. This confusion not only broke some rapport, but it also wasted time for both of us. There is one little extra step the person could have taken to eliminate the confusion.
