Authentic Sales: What Does Success Leave Clues Mean?

Success Leaves Clues. So What Should You Actually Copy?

Have you ever watched someone who's successful in business and thought, Maybe I should start doing that too?

If it's working for them, shouldn't you try it too?

Maybe.

There's a phrase you've probably heard before: Success leaves clues. There's a lot of truth in that. Paying attention to people who are achieving the results you want can teach you quite a bit.

The mistake is assuming those clues are instructions you're supposed to copy.

There's an important question to ask before adding someone else's strategy to your business:

If you were on the receiving end of it, how would it make you feel?

That's where authentic sales really begins.

Success Leaves Clues, Not a Script You Have to Follow

There are people in your industry (or even outside of it) who are doing things exceptionally well.

Pay attention to them.

How do they communicate and build relationships? How do they invite people into conversations? What are they doing consistently that seems to contribute to their success?

Then ask yourself another question:

What part of what they're doing actually resonates with you?

The goal isn't to take on someone else's personality or start showing up in a way that doesn't feel like you.

It's to notice the behaviors and strategies that you admire and determine which ones make sense for the way you want to do business.

You can learn from someone without becoming them.

Put Yourself on the Receiving End of Your Sales Strategy

One of the simplest ways to evaluate a sales strategy is to stop looking at it from the seller's perspective for a moment.

Put yourself in the prospective client's position.

If someone you didn't know sent you the message you're about to send, how would you feel receiving it?

If someone walked up to you at a networking event and said what you're planning to say, would you want to continue that conversation?

Would the interaction feel genuine or would you appreciate the approach?

Would you respond?

These questions can become a useful benchmark for deciding what belongs in your sales process and what doesn't.

Would You Respond to Your Own Sales Message?

Years ago, a client came to me with an idea for a campaign and the messaging she planned to use.

So I asked her a simple question:

“If you received a message like this, what would you do?”

Her answer?

She'd instantly delete it and be offended.

Well, there's the answer.

Why would you intentionally represent yourself and your business in a way that you wouldn't appreciate as the person receiving it?

Sometimes we're so focused on whether a sales tactic might work that we forget to ask whether we actually want to use it.

Authentic Sales Doesn't Mean Avoiding Strategy

There's an important distinction here.

Selling authentically doesn't mean only doing what's comfortable. or never trying something new, never following up or avoiding a strategy simply because it stretches you.

It means being intentional about how you implement what you're learning.

When you notice something another successful person is doing, consider:

Would this feel good to receive? Does this align with how I want people to experience me? Can I use the principle without copying the person's personality or approach?

Maybe you admire how consistently someone follows up. You don't have to copy their exact messages. You can learn from their consistency and create a follow-up approach that sounds like you.

Maybe someone is exceptional at starting conversations at networking events. You don't need their exact opening line. Pay attention to why their approach works and find a way to create that same connection naturally.

That's the difference between learning from success and impersonating it.

Your Buyer Gets a Vote

It's easy to evaluate a sales strategy based entirely on what you want from it.

You want the person to reply, or you want the meeting or for them to buy…

Of course you do.

The person on the other side of the interaction has an experience too.

So before sending the message, launching the campaign or trying the latest sales tactic, turn it around.

What's it like to receive this?

That question can tell you quite a bit.

If your immediate reaction is, I'd delete this, I'd feel uncomfortable, or I'd never respond to someone who approached me that way, it's worth reconsidering whether that's how you want to represent your business.

Let Success Leave Clues, Then Decide Which Ones Are Yours

Pay attention to successful people.

Notice what they're doing. Learn from their behaviors. Study how they communicate and build relationships.

Then filter what you see through the kind of experience you want to create for your prospective clients.

You don't have to take on somebody else's persona to become more successful at sales.

Take the pieces that resonate. Adapt them to the way you naturally communicate. Think about how they feel from the other person's perspective. And leave the rest.

Success leaves clues. You still get to decide which ones belong in your business.
