How Sales Should Work (Hint: Not Like This)

How Sales Should Work

Have you ever been interrupted at the worst possible time by someone trying to sell you something? Picture this: it's dinner time, you’re finally sitting down with your family, and the doorbell rings. A door-to-door HelloFresh salesperson is standing there—pitching how they’re going to “make dinner easier.” Ironically, they’re stopping dinner in its tracks.

Turns out, this wasn’t even the first interruption. A few hours earlier, their partner had already pitched the same offer and been told “no.” Clearly, the message didn’t make it back to the team.

This kind of sales tactic is exactly what gives sales a bad name. It’s pushy, disrespectful, and lacks any real understanding of the potential client. And frankly, it’s the reason many people feel uncomfortable with the idea of selling.

That’s why I was invited as a guest on the Streamlined Solopreneur Podcast —to talk about how sales should work.

Tune in here!

Sales Should Be a Two-Way Conversation

Sales isn’t about barging in or interrupting. It’s a collaborative conversation—and it only works when there’s permission to engage. One of the biggest mistakes people make in sales is thinking it’s a one-way street.

The truth? You earn the right to sell by first building rapport and asking if it’s okay to even have the conversation. Consent and respect go a long way.

Speak the Client’s Language

People have their own communication styles and needs. When you’re selling, you have to speak their language—not yours. It’s not just about what you offer, but how you offer it. That’s why it’s so important to tailor your messaging and your delivery to the person in front of you.

Don’t Make Assumptions—Ask Questions

The worst thing you can do in sales is assume. When you assume, you’re operating from your own limiting beliefs—not from the client’s actual needs. Instead, ask clarifying questions. Stay curious. That’s how you build real relationships and trust.

Sales isn’t about pushing people. It’s about connecting, serving, and solving problems—with consent, curiosity, and clarity. If more people approached it this way, sales wouldn’t have such a bad reputation.
