Have you ever hesitated to put out a sale or special promotion because you were worried someone who paid full price might see it? You’re not alone — this is a common concern among service-based business owners, coaches, and consultants. The good news? There’s a simple way to handle price promotions with confidence, without damaging relationships or second-guessing your marketing strategy.
The Mental Block That Holds People Back
You create a great offer. You're excited to share it. Then that little voice creeps in:
“What if someone who already bought at full price sees this? Will they feel cheated? Will they be upset?”
These kinds of what-ifs can derail your momentum and prevent you from putting your offers into the world — which ultimately means fewer people benefit from your work.
The Game-Changing Advice That Helped Me
One of my mentors gave me a piece of advice years ago that I still use today:
Plan ahead.
Before you launch your promotion, decide how you’ll respond if someone who paid full price asks about the discount. Know in advance what you’re comfortable offering — whether that’s a bonus, a special add-on, or even nothing at all.
That way, you’re not scrambling for words or feeling anxious if someone does reach out. You're calm, clear, and confident.
What to Say When Someone Asks
Let’s be honest — it rarely happens.
Most people who bought at full price aren’t scouring your website for new offers. They’re busy and satisfied with what they got. But if someone does reach out, you’ll be prepared.
Personally, I don’t typically offer refunds. But I do offer something extra — a bonus, a training, or a small upgrade — to show appreciation and keep the relationship strong. You get to decide what feels right for you and your business.
Your Business Wasn’t Built for One Person
Here’s the most important part: You didn’t build your business to avoid upsetting one past client. You built it to serve many.
So if you want to run a promotion, do it. Plan your response just in case — and move forward anyway. Most of the time, no one says a thing. And when they do? You’ve already decided how to handle it with grace.
