How to Sell to Skeptical Clients (Even If They’ve Been Burned Before)

Learning how to sell to skeptical clients is a skill every business owner needs especially when a prospect shares that they’ve had a bad experience in the past.

It happens more often than you might think.

A potential client comes into the conversation already hesitant. Maybe they’ve been burned by someone in your industry before, and now they’re cautious about trusting again.

So what do you say?

The wrong response can cost you the sale. The right response can build trust quickly and position you as the clear choice.

Step 1: Don’t “jump into the pit”

When a prospect shares a negative experience, it can be tempting to agree with them or even criticize the other provider.

Avoid this.

Agreeing too strongly or adding commentary pulls you into the negativity and doesn’t help move the conversation forward.

Step 2: Validate and acknowledge their experience

Instead, start with empathy:

“I can understand why you’d feel that way, and I’m really sorry that was your experience.”

This builds connection and shows that you’re listening without reinforcing the negative story.

Step 3: Shift the conversation to your process

Once you’ve acknowledged their experience, gently guide the conversation forward by sharing what working with you is like.

For example:
“One of the things my clients experience when they work with me is…”

This is your opportunity to highlight your strengths and what makes your approach different.

Step 4: Offer a form of guarantee

To help rebuild trust, offer reassurance.

This doesn’t have to be a money-back guarantee.

It could sound like:

  • Continuing to work together until results are achieved
  • Offering an additional session for support
  • Providing structured check-ins

The goal is to reduce perceived risk and help them feel safe moving forward.

Step 5: Invite them to take the next step

This is where many people hesitate and miss the opportunity.

After addressing their concerns, ask:

“Based on that, is this something you’d like to move forward with?”

This is a simple closing question that gives them space to say yes, ask another question, or share any remaining hesitation.

Final Thought

Selling to skeptical clients isn’t about convincing them. It’s about guiding them.

When you:

  • Stay out of the negativity
  • Validate their experience
  • Clearly communicate your process
  • Offer reassurance
  • And confidently invite the next step

You make it easier for them to trust you and say yes.
