Some prospects show interest, express enthusiasm, and even say they want to work with you—yet they still haven’t taken action. These “fence-sitters” linger in indecision, leaving you wondering what’s holding them back. Learning practical sales closing techniques will make all the difference.

If closing these hesitant buyers feels like a challenge, there’s one simple question that can shift the conversation and move them toward commitment:

“What would it take for you to take action on this today?”

This direct yet non-confrontational question encourages the prospect to verbalize what’s stopping them. Often, it’s something small—something that can easily be addressed to help them finalize their decision.

Why This Question Works

Many prospects get stuck in decision paralysis. They’re interested, but until asked to define what’s standing in their way, they may not even realize why they’re hesitating. This question brings their hesitation to the surface, making it easier to address their concerns and guide them forward.

When asked in a live conversation, wait for their response. Silence is powerful—give them space to think and reply. The answer they provide gives insight into the next step needed to finalize the sale.

Using This Question in Emails

When sending this question via email, adding a “menu of options” can be even more effective. Offering choices simplifies the decision-making process and makes it easier for the prospect to respond.

For example:

“What would it take for you to complete your sign-up today?

  • Do you need the link? Here it is: [insert link]
  • Would you prefer to start next month instead?
  • Do you need more details on X, Y, or Z?
  • Or something else…?

The phrase “Or something else…” invites them to share their hesitation without pressure, making it more likely they’ll engage.

Closing Fence-Sitters with Ease

Sales closing techniques don’t have to be aggressive or pushy. Asking the right questions and giving prospects the space to express their needs makes the process feel natural and collaborative.

Start using this question in your conversations and emails to turn hesitant prospects into action-takers. Small shifts in language can lead to big wins in closing deals.
