You’re not new at this. You have deep expertise, a reputation that brings you referrals, and a body of work that speaks for itself.
And somewhere between the first conversation and the signed agreement, deals slow down in ways they didn’t used to. A prospect asks for a proposal before you’re ready to write one. A second decision maker appears and the momentum stalls. Someone says the budget isn’t set yet, and you’re not sure what to do with it.
This isn’t a confidence problem. Your sales process hasn’t matured at the same rate as your business.
Consultants, agency owners, and service-based founders selling $10,000 to $50,000 engagements hire me to show them how to close more of the conversations they’re already having.
This is the right fit when
- You sell five-figure consulting or professional-services engagements
- Your sales cycle runs across several conversations or several decision makers
- Prospects ask for a proposal before you’re ready to write one
- Referrals and qualified leads arrive, and conversion is the gap
- You’re unsure when to follow up and when to give someone space
- You’re not certain whether something was a buying signal
- You explain too much during discovery
- You hesitate when it’s time to ask for the business
Why selling a consulting engagement is different
Selling a $2,000 package and selling a $40,000 engagement aren’t the same skill.
The sale happens across multiple conversations. There’s rarely one moment where someone decides. There’s a sequence, and each conversation either advances it or quietly ends it.
More than one person decides. The person you’re talking to often isn’t the only one who has to say yes. What you say has to survive being repeated by someone else, in a room you’re not in.
Your expertise works against you. The instinct is to demonstrate value by explaining. In a five-figure sale, over-explaining reads as uncertainty, and it turns discovery into free consulting.
Proposals arrive too early. A proposal written before you understand the decision is a document that gets compared on price.
I’ve written about each of these at length. Unmasking consultant culture covers why expertise doesn’t sell itself. Building a proposal when a prospect will not give you a budget covers the budget conversation. Selling to the C-suite covers multiple decision makers.
For the whole sale walked through step by step, read how to sell five-figure consulting engagements. When the sticking point is the number itself, selling high-ticket services without discounting covers pricing and how to hold it.
How we work together
We start with your actual sales calls. Bring a recording of a real conversation to a strategy session and we go through it together. I show you the moments that shaped the outcome. Where your prospect gave you a buying signal. Where you explained when you could have asked. Where the conversation turned, and what to say instead next time.
Most sales coaching works from what you remember about a call. This works from what actually happened on it.
Then we build the sequence. My framework, the Selling Staircase, maps the five steps a relationship climbs on the way to a signed agreement.
- Introduction. Your prospect meets you or your business for the first time. Ensure you’re making a positive first impression.
- Curiosity. Engage in a way that makes them want more and ask questions. Watch for buying signals and act on them immediately.
- Discovery. Learn what their biggest struggle, need, or want actually is. Ask the right questions.
- Proposal. Clearly lay out an offer that meets the needs you just uncovered.
- Close. Use closing language, then zip it. Let your prospect respond first, and be ready to uncover and address any objections.
Every step ends with an invitation. Nobody drifts up the staircase on their own. At each step you invite your prospect to the next one, and they accept. This is the mechanism, and it repeats all the way to the close.
Deals rarely die from a no. They die from a conversation that ended without a next step.
And we work on the language. As a Master Certified Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, I work at the level of what you actually say. Not scripts. The specific words that keep a conversation moving, and the ones that quietly end it.
Who I am
I’ve spent nearly 30 years in sales. For 17 of them I sold technology to organizations including Hewlett-Packard, NASA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where I closed individual deals worth more than $3 million, managed a territory generating over $30 million in annual sales, and earned multiple top-producer awards. I’ve spent the 13 years since building Sales Maven.
I’m the author of three books on selling, including The Selling Staircase, the framework at the heart of everything I teach, and Buying Signals, on recognizing when a prospect is ready to move forward. My podcast ranks in the top 1% globally.
What clients say
“Before working with Nikki Rausch, I was closing about 45% of my sales calls and charging around $4,500 for my core offer.
Today I charge 4X that amount, and my most recent client came in at 5X. After raising my price, my close rate doubled, from about 45% to 90%.
The crazy part? The offer didn’t fundamentally change.
Nikki taught me how to communicate its value, ask the right questions, recognize buying signals, and confidently lead the sales process instead of letting the sales process lead me.
She also taught me something equally valuable: when to move a buyer forward, and when to draw a gracious line in the sand and let them go.
I’m making more per client, closing at a dramatically higher rate, and spending far less time in sales conversations that go nowhere.”
Jeanette Stein, AI Consultant, Stein Solutions
“Using one of Nikki’s referral strategies and the language she guided me to use, I reached out to a current client and shared that I was available for additional work. One conversation led to a referral, which turned into a pilot program. The pilot quickly expanded into a national rollout and is now a core part of my business, generating multiple six figures in revenue.”
Dr. Angelique Adams, Former Chief Innovation Officer
“I was stuck in comparison mode, anchoring off a price point I was comfortable with. Nikki showed me how to more objectively view pricing and position my services without discounting. My client just approved the proposal for $8,000 higher than I was planning to charge.”
Melissa Jacobs, Consumer Insights Consultant, Crow & Pitcher
“One focused suggestion directly resulted in $13,500 in new business.”

Who this is not for
This work is not for every consultant, and that is intentional.
We are probably not the right fit when:
- You believe selling a $10K to $50K engagement is primarily a numbers game. When your strategy is more leads, more outreach, more calls, this is not the approach I teach. My work focuses on having better conversations with the right prospects.
- You want a word-for-word script that does the selling for you. You get language, frameworks, and strategy, but not something to memorize. The goal is to understand what is happening in the conversation so you know what to say, when to say it, and why it matters.
- You are looking for pressure tactics to get prospects across the finish line. No manufactured urgency. No clever closes designed to corner someone into a yes. You learn how to confidently guide the decision while giving your prospect room to make the right one.
- You want someone else to handle the sales conversations for you. This work is designed for the person who is directly selling the offer and will be in the room with the prospect. At this level, your ability to communicate value, navigate objections, and ask for the business is an asset. We build that capability in you.
- You are still figuring out whether people will pay for your expertise. This work is designed for established consultants with a proven offer who want to become more effective at converting high-value opportunities. When you are earlier in your business, the Sales Maven Society is a better place to start.
You do not need to become more aggressive to close bigger deals. You need to become more skilled at the conversations that lead to them.
Ways to work together
Private coaching runs in three-month engagements with strategy sessions, call review, and direct access between sessions.
The Sales Strategy Intensive is a single 50-minute session on one real situation: a proposal, a pricing conversation, or a deal that stalled.
